Can I Import A Duty-Free Car?

If you are a diplomat or expatriate stationed in Kenya, it is possible to import a vehicle duty-free. Most international organizations such as the UN and its affiliated bodies, Embassies, consulates and NGOs enjoy this privilege as part of an MOU with the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Each of these organizations has a protocol office that helps with duty-free imports among other things.

Confirm your Eligibility

As a rule of thumb, you will be required to import a car within the first year upon your arrival in Kenya.

However, it is advisable to check with your protocol office for a definite timeline as it may differ with organizations.

Typically, you can import one vehicle for yourself and one for your spouse.

Depending on your organization, you may sell or pay import taxes on your vehicle after four years, then become eligible to import another duty-free.

What documentation do I need to import a car to Kenya duty-free?

  • Original vehicle documents (Bill of Lading, Japanese export certificate + translation, KEBS QISJ certificate, and commercial invoice).
  • Duty exemption document (Pro 1B)
  • Diplomatic passport

Can I buy a car already in Kenya or must I import?

Buying a car locally may not qualify for duty exemption since documentation must be in your name before import. It’s best to import directly from Japan for transparency and flexibility.

Okay I understand. I want to import a car duty-free, where do I start?

Our Import Process

Our import process is simple and efficient. We have 10 years of experience in the business. When you come to us, we take time to understand your car requirements and offer appropriate professional advice.

We handle everything from procuring the vehicle in Japan, vehicle inspection, shipping to the port of Mombasa, clearance, registration, and delivery to your doorstep. We also have a flexible payment schedule.

1. Agree on Vehicle Specs & Budget

The first step in the car import process is to agree on the vehicle specs—make, model, colour, desired mileage, etc.—as well as a budget.

On our website, you will find numerous options of cars streaming straight from Japanese auctions. When you find a car that interests you, simply fill out the inquiry form on the right-hand side of the page so we can contact you with more details.

Alternatively, you can call or visit our office where our sales specialists will guide you through available options.

If you’re unsure which car to import or torn between options, we’ll walk you through the pros and cons of each model. Our goal is to ensure you get a car that truly fits your needs.

2. Confirm the Car and Condition

Once we understand your needs and budget, we monitor auctions for matching vehicles. When you find a car you’re happy with, we confirm its condition using the auction sheet and, if necessary, arrange a physical inspection by our partners in Japan.

We’ll also advise on auction timing and provide a full cost breakdown, including CIF, import duty, shipping, port charges, clearing fees, and our agency fee.

3. Car Purchase & Signing of Sales Agreement

To purchase the car, a 30% deposit (commitment fee) of the total value is required. We’ll then sign a legally binding sales agreement outlining the payment schedule.

Once payment is received, we authorize our Japanese partners to purchase the car from the auction.

4. Inspection & Shipping Preparation

After the purchase, the vehicle undergoes mandatory KEBS inspection. Our Japanese partners also de-register the car and prepare it for shipping on the next available vessel.

5. Shipping & Arrival in Mombasa

Once paperwork is complete, your car is shipped to Kenya. Shipping typically takes 27–30 days. Upon arrival at the port of Mombasa, our Kenyan team takes over for clearing and registration.

6. Delivery

After registration, we deliver your car to your doorstep (or as discussed). At Croton Motors, we ensure safe transport—your vehicle is delivered on a carrier, not driven on the road.
